MISE-EN-SCène
For guitar, soprano recorder and electronics [5’]. Commissioned by Dylan Lardelli. Supported by Creative New Zealand and the Nicholas Tarling Charitable Trust.
Programme Note
Mise-en-scène takes its inspiration from the scene, sounds and abstraction of an imagined coastline and its avian inhabitants, in a homage to the Fairy Tern, New Zealand’s rarest bird. There are only around 40 birds remaining, across five beaches in the Northland region of New Zealand’s North Island. Fairy Terns form monogamous breeding pairs. These small birds make nests in shell-covered sand, hover over the sea and dive-bomb for food.
